SKOPJE (Reuters) - Shocked Macedonians on Tuesday mourned one of their biggest stars, singer Tose Proeski, who was killed in a car crash on a Croatian motorway in the early hours.

In the capital Skopje, thousands of sobbing fans gathered in the main square, lighting candles and leaving flowers, teddy bears and posters of the 26-year-old pop star in makeshift shrines.

The government said the day of Proeski's funeral would be a day of national mourning and awarded him the title "Honorable citizen of Macedonia." It cancelled its sessions for the day, and sent a delegation to Croatia to recover his body.

"We all couldn't help but love Tose Proeski," said Macedonia's President Branko Crvenkovski in a statement expressing his condolences to the singer's family.

Croatian police said Proeski's vehicle hit the back of a truck and crashed into the protective fence on the Zagreb to Belgrade highway near Nova Gradiska, 120 km (70 miles) east of Zagreb. He was asleep in the passenger seat.

Two other people in the car were injured.

Macedonian television stations interrupted their regular programs with news of the accident.

Proeski, a classically-trained singer, started his pop career at 15, releasing his debut album at 18.

His boyish good looks and passionate delivery made him a regional favorite. He had several number one hits in Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia with songs such as "Cija si" (Whose Are You) and "Ako me poglednes vo oci" (If You Look Me In The Eyes).

He sang in Macedonian and Serbian and represented Macedonia in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2004.

He was also a UNICEF goodwill ambassador and toured the Balkans to promote humanitarian projects.

10:10pm: Packing stuff
well i just seen that i rarely wrote into that journal but it's just because i'm really busy this days. I just came back home from Nirway and now i'm allready packing my stuff for Polans. I'm going to Zakopane on skijumping and i'm really excited about that trip. Ania i'll give u a call when i arrive. Maarja is coming aswell and Tarja and Trinu said that they might come too-but i'm not sure about Anke and Kristina. I was also at 4hills tournament and it was absolutely brilliant! well better get going have fun

9:54pm: 4 hills tournament in ski jumping
The time is flwing by so fast that i just can't even think about it,and it's only one month and here will be new year! I'm just curious if there is anyone who+s going to 4hills tournament to Asutria or Germany and ofcourse where and when!

11:51am: FIS GRAND PRIX SKI-JUMPING KRANJ (SLO) PLASTIC
So hello from Kranj! There's a short report from ski jumping competition in Kranj which was from 1st till 2nd Spetember 2006 on a Large Hill in Kranj at the 6th Grand Prix Competition.

The winner of the match was Swiss Simon Ammann who jumped 106m and 105.5 m. On the second place was Austrians Wolfgang Loitzl who jumped 104,5 and 105.5m. On the third place was Cezch Roman Koudelka with 101.5m and 107m. Jumper of the day was Austrian Manuel Fettner.. At the trial jumpThomas Morgenstern from Austria jumped 112m but he fall.At the end he was 11th or 10th i don't remember really.

12:17pm: Morning everyone. Last night was a huge party in Manana and i'm preety excited about todays competition i hope that Austrians,Swiss,Cezchs,Norges,and Slovenians will do the best the can.

I waked up one hour ago,eat breakfast and went out. Fall in Swedens Andreas Aren who followed me for a while,and at the end he scared me at the other side at the club *lol* Michael fall down yesterday while i scared him when he was running :) and Thomas fall at the end of the hill at the 1st training yday when he jumped 105.5m.

Also it was bless with the Swiss at the party and the Chechs aswell. Tonight after the competition we're going to the last party again with Austrians and Swiss.

Oh and one of the German jumpers fall infront my mate last night outside their hotel

As the Polish site skokinarciarskie.pl reports, we will most likely not see the Finns in Zakopane. They had planned to train there days before the competition (26.08.), however the hill and the stadium will be closed at that time because the organizers wish to prepare them for the competition. Jussi Hautamäki said: ,,It does not make sense to come to Poland for competition only as we can train in Finland and save some money. We don't take the SGP that seriously anyway. If the hill opened suddenly, we would come immediately as the infrastructure is great there. We are all sad we can't go.''
